AMERICAN ICONS @ GRANET MUSEUM, AIX -EN - PROVENCE

September 11, 2015

Can’t wait for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to re-open in 2016? Get a sneak peek of the museum’s new collection when its American Icons exhibit opens at Granet museum in Aix-en-Provence, after at successful display at Gran Palais in Paris.

American Icons marks the international debut of SFMOMA On the Go, an array of new art experiences, exhibitions, and programs presented while the museum is closed for construction, and reflects SFMOMA’s ability to extend its reach to a global scale, impacting international audiences.

This exhibition has particular relevance because it is the first public presentation after SF Moma and the Fisher Family agreed on a partnership to exhibit the Fisher Collection alongside the museum’s. The selection has been made  from the SF Moma Collection and the one of Doris and Donald Fisher, the co-founders of Gap, which together are considered among the most important modern and contemporary art collections in the world.

The show at the Granet covers key figures from the 1940s to the early 21st century. Andy Warhol, unavoidably, is there with portraits of Liz Taylor, Jackie Kennedy and other American icons. Alexander Calder has several of his famous mobiles, including “Tower with Painting” from 1951, considered one of the treasures of the Fisher collection.

Other impressive works on display are the  huge piece by Roy Lichtenstein, Figures with Sunset, Carl Andre walkthrough sculptures, and other quintessentially American works by Sol LeWit, Agnes Martin, Cy Twombly, Richard Diebenkorn, Dan Flavin, and Donald Judd.

A comprehensive catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition, including an introductory essay by Garrels, will reflect the diversity of movements and styles seen in American Icons, as well as a wide variety of new approaches toward the use of materials, color and form.

American Icons is on view at the  Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence until the 18th of October.
