ROBERT DOISNEAU @ RODIN MUSEUM, PARIS

July 10, 2015

In Paris, at Rodin Museum, there is an exhibition that you can't miss : Robert Doisneau, Sculptor and Sculptures.

If everybody knows Robert Doisneau (1912-1994) as THE photographer of Paris, who has caught with his photographic eye the Parisian atmosphere and made with his works a remarkable reportage about the city, you have to know that he also loved to photograph  statues and sculptures in the parks and in the streets.

This famous photographer of the last century had his studio in Montrouge, very close to the Rodin museum, which he liked to visit, far from the bustle of Paris. It is here, on 25th September 1993, that he depicted the designer Philippe Druillet, with whom he shared a cartoon project, called Insane Paris. This would be his final portrait.

These pictures are the starting point for the exhibition: Doisneau’s familiarity with the Musée Rodin inspired us to present his work through his close connections with sculptors and sculpture. This rich theme is illustrated by some thirty prints, featuring iconic photographs alongside unknown works. Throughout his career – whether for photo reports, commissions, impromptu occasions or meetings with friends – Doisneau frequented the studios of many sculptors including Arp, Canonici, César, Giacometti, Hajdu, Hernandez, Henri Laurens, Parpan, Tinguely, Niki de Saint Phalle and Voisin.

So discover the snapshots of the Thinker by Rodin, the installation of the sculptures of Maillol in the Tuileries Garden, or Dina Vierny, involved in the development of operations.
